In viaggio con Dante

MARATONA INFERNALE

Lamberto Lambertini narrates that Borges read The Divine Comedy at the age of 30, on the tram journey to the library where he worked. His edition featured a parallel Italian/English translation, and by the time he got to the Purgatory he realised he could read it in Italian. “What were the images accompanying his reading?”, Lambertini wonders. “What did he see when he lifted his eyes from the page? Commuters, employees, workers. Beyond the tram windows, a steady stream of streets, houses and the life of Buenos Aires at different times and periods”. This suggestion lies at the base of Maratona infernale: the 34 Cantos of Inferno will serve as a commentary on contemporary Italy, with its daily labour, its cities, its landscapes... just steps away from Dante’s tomb.
