Both Brian Eno and Nick Cave were ready to bet on her talent when success greeted her debut single, Jezabel, in 2010. It was just the cover of a 1951 song, and her eponymous debut album, Anna Calvi, followed a few months later. The singer-songwriter and guitarist, born in England to an Italian father, was then 30. The album was nominated for the Mercury Prize (2011) and a Brit Award (2012). Her second album, One Breath, is more personal and experimental, composed in one go and calling on a broad spectrum of influences ranging from African music to John Adams via Sing to me, a tribute to Maria Callas. All these references are filtered and modelled by Calvi’s distinctive and magnetic voice, and by the punchy sound of her Stratocaster.
