The key of C minor is a sort of trademark of Beethoven’s: for many commentators this is a special key, said to represent Man’s Promethean struggle with Fate, where human reason ultimately triumphs over blind, inexorable fate. C minor is also the key of his Piano Concerto no. 3 (1800), almost sculptural and Michelangelo-like in its forceful use of the theme in the first movement. A radically different, funereal theme is stated by the clarinets in the opening of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony no. 5, composed almost ninety years later: the author wanted to express “the inscrutable predestination of Providence”, which reflects in a representation of the unequal struggle with Fate where Man is bound to succumb.
