UTE LEMPER
Canzoni dal secolo breve (1914-1991)

A tribute to the Europe of Hobsbawm’s short XX century, paid by the extraordinary voice of Ute Lemper (accompanied by Cherubini in her third appearance at the Festival). She will recall its crucial events through significant songs from two European capitals, Berlin and Paris, from Lili Marleen, composed at the beginning of WWI and made popular by Marlene Dietrich with soldiers fighting in the Second World War, to the music of Kurt Weill, a Jew who had studied with Busoni in Berlin, reached fame in the Weimar Republic and then fled Nazy Germany, first in Paris and then in the US. The programme also includes songs by Edith Piaf and by Belgian poet Jacques Brel, the symbols of the complicated and controversial Golden Age preceding the crisis that would end with the disintegration of the Soviet Union.
