We are often quick in using the label “Russian music”, but if the Russian musical tradition is undeniably and unmistakably lyrical and melodic, we can’t forget that the interests of great Russian composers often ranged far and wide to include both native and Western practices. This is true for Swan Lake (1877) by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who often accommodated Western rules of composition to the traditional characteristic style of ballet blanc. It is also true for the late-Romantic pathos of Sergei Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto no. 2 (1901), and especially for Modest Mussorgsky’s genuinely Russian Pictures at an Exhibition (1874), masterfully re-orchestrated by Maurice Ravel in 1922.
