CHÉRI

When in June 1920 Chéri appeared in instalments in «La Vie Parisienne», controversial Colette was around fifty: as old as Léa, the refined protagonist of her most famous novella, an aging courtesan in the throes of a despicable but intense relationship with Chéri, a whimsical and irresistible man roughly half her age. And as old as Alessandra Ferri, who, after a seven-year break, is back with renewed energy in the role of Léa, in a show which “has a hypnotic visual beauty” arising from the poetry of the dancers’ bodies («New York Times»). Ms Ferri partners with Herman Cornejo, a principal dancer at American Ballet Theatre: their rapturous dancing captures the ecstasy of passion and the melancholy of pain, condensed in a narrative set against the tragic backdrop of the Great War.
